Le gouvernement du Canada investit dans plus de 330 projets de recherche de pointe menés par des universités de partout au pays
OTTAWA, ONTARIO — De la lutte contre la crise climatique à l’amélioration des soins de santé locaux, les chercheurs et chercheuses universitaires du Canada sont au cœur de l’innovation, ici et ailleurs. Le gouvernement du Canada s’engage à ce que nos équipes de recherche demeurent à la fine pointe de la science et de l’innovation.
Aujourd’hui, l’honorable François-Philippe Champagne, ministre de l’Innovation, des Sciences et de l’Industrie, a annoncé un financement de 77 millions de dollars pour 332 projets d’infrastructure de recherche dans 50 universités au pays. Cette contribution, dans le cadre du Fonds des leaders John-R.-Evans de la Fondation canadienne pour l’innovation (FCI), permettra aux universités d’attirer et de retenir les meilleurs chercheurs et chercheuses.
Un des projets financés par cette initiative est mené par l’École de génie biomédical de l’Université de la Colombie-Britannique, où la bioingénieure Anna Blakney se penche sur la prévention et le traitement des infections, comme la COVID-19, ainsi que sur les troubles et les maladies héréditaires, dont le cancer. Ses travaux visent à révolutionner les traitements grâce à de nouvelles biotechnologies impliquant l’ingénierie des formulations de vaccins.
Voici quelques-uns des multiples projets qui seront financés dans le cadre du Fonds des leaders John-R.-Evans :
- La recherche autochtone. Nokom’s House, le nouveau laboratoire de l’Université de Guelph, permettra aux chercheurs et chercheuses d’utiliser des méthodes de recherche autochtones afin de créer un modèle de recherche axé sur la terre. Ce laboratoire, mené par Kim Anderson, Sheri Longboat et Brittany Luby, intégrera des principes autochtones et impliquera la communauté.
- Gestion avancée de l’énergie des résidences et des bâtiments. L’utilisation croissante des sources d’énergie renouvelables, telles que les panneaux solaires et le stockage par batterie, a créé des défis importants pour les services d’électricité. Tony Chung, de l’Université de la Saskatchewan, développe des bancs d’essai en temps réel afin de créer des systèmes avancés de gestion de l’énergie dans les résidences et les bâtiments. La recherche issue des bancs d’essai permettra de poursuivre et de promouvoir l’utilisation des technologies d’énergie verte.
- Comprendre les « pandémies de l’ombre ». Cindy Poremba, de l’Université de l’École d’art et de design de l’Ontario à Toronto, utilisera l’imagerie de nouvelle génération pour dresser un meilleur portrait des « pandémies de l’ombre » qui ont été éclipsées par le fardeau sanitaire engendré par la COVID-19. Ces impacts secondaires, tels que les conséquences de l’isolement et de la crise économique, passent inaperçus et sont surtout ressentis par les personnes marginalisées. Une meilleure compréhension de ce sujet favorisera des interventions efficaces et avantageuses après la pandémie.
- Du béton écologique. Le béton est le matériau de construction le plus utilisé au monde, avec plus de 10 milliards de tonnes produites chaque année. Par contre, la production de béton peut être nocive pour l’environnement, et les infrastructures en béton vieillissantes, comme les routes et les ponts, nécessitent des milliards de dollars de réparations. Rahil Khoshnazar, de l’Université de Calgary, utilisera sa nouvelle infrastructure de recherche pour mettre au point de nouveaux matériaux en béton écologiques et durables pour aider à protéger la planète et réduire les coûts.

Dans le cadre du financement total du Fonds des leaders John-R.-Evans, qui s’élève à 59 463 888 $, un montant supplémentaire de 17 839 166 $ a été accordé au titre du Fonds d’exploitation des infrastructures, un mécanisme qui permet aux établissements d’assumer les coûts d’exploitation et d’entretien supplémentaires associés à la nouvelle infrastructure.
