Équiper les scientifiques canadiens avec les meilleurs outils de recherche
Victoria (Colombie-Britannique) – Les découvertes des scientifiques du Canada créent de nouvelles possibilités, renforcent l’économie et contribuent à la croissance de la classe moyenne. Nos chercheurs ont besoin d’outils et de laboratoires sophistiqués pour innover dans des domaines comme le changement climatique, l’énergie propre, la recherche océanique et l’intelligence artificielle.
Aujourd’hui, l’honorable Kirsty Duncan, ministre des Sciences et ministre des Sports et des Personnes handicapées, a annoncé à la University of Victoria un investissement de plus de 42 millions de dollars pour appuyer 186 nouveaux projets d'infrastructure de recherche dans 37 universités canadiennes. Ces sommes versées par le Fonds des leaders John-R.-Evans de la Fondation canadienne pour l’innovation aideront les universités à recruter et à maintenir en poste des chercheurs de haut niveau, particulièrement des chercheurs en début de carrière, en leur procurant l’équipement pointe nécessaire pour gagner un avantage concurrentiel dans leur domaine respectif.
La University of Victoria a reçu 355 000 dollars pour deux projets. Au département de génie civil, le laboratoire d’Heather Buckley mènera des recherches de pointe pour trouver une solution au défi de la contamination de l’eau potable dans les collectivités en régions minières. Avec l’appui de la FCI, ses travaux permettront de créer des capteurs avec lesquels les collectivités éloignées pourront surveiller la qualité de l’eau, contribuant ainsi à la salubrité de l’eau pour tous les résidents.
Dans la division des sciences médicales, Leigh Anne Swayne tentera de mieux comprendre les interactions des différentes molécules qui permettent de contrôler le développement et le fonctionnement adéquats du cerveau. Le nouveau financement permettra d’acquérir un microscope à fluorescence à superrésolution plus performant que celui utilisé à ce jour dans le laboratoire, qui servira à mettre au point une thérapie d’atténuation des effets des troubles débilitants du cerveau, des arythmies, de la syphilis et du cancer.
Conjugués à l'appui important du gouvernement du Canada aux sciences fondamentales dans le budget de 2018, ces investissements permettront de renforcer la réputation du Canada en tant que chef de file international de la recherche, tout en permettant aux nouvelles générations de scientifiques de satisfaire leurs ambitions.

- Le Fonds des leaders John-R.-Evans permet à un certain nombre d’excellents chercheurs d’établissements canadiens de mener des travaux recherches de pointe en leur fournissant l’infrastructure dont ils ont besoin pour s’établir comme chefs de file dans leur domaine respectif.
- Le financement total s’élève à 42 337 780 de dollars : 1) financement d’immobilisation de 32 567 523 de dollars pour l’infrastructure; 2) montant additionnel de 9 770 257 de dollars du Fonds d’exploitation de l’infrastructure de la FCI, lequel programme aide les établissements à assumer les couts d’exploitation et d’entretien supplémentaires liés à l’acquisition d’une nouvelle infrastructure.
- Le budget de 2018 établit un investissement record de près de 4 milliards de dollars dans un nouvel appui aux sciences, de sorte que les Canadiens puissent faire des découvertes que nous ne pouvons même pas encore imaginer mais qui pourraient changer le monde.
- Cet investissement octroie 1,7 milliard de dollars aux trois organismes fédéraux de financement de la recherche dont bénéficie la prochaine génération de chercheurs.
- Le budget de 2018 promet 763 millions de dollars à la Fondation canadienne pour l’innovation pour doter nos scientifiques, nos chercheurs et nos étudiants d’outils de pointe afin qu’ils disposent de laboratoires et d’installations d’avant-garde pour réaliser leurs plus grandes découvertes.
