Veiller à ce que les universités et les chercheurs canadiens atteignent l’excellence scientifique grâce à des laboratoires et à de l’équipement de pointe
SUDBURY (ONTARIO) — Que ce soit pour mettre au point des technologies médicales avancées ou trouver de nouvelles utilisations aux déchets agricoles, les chercheurs ont besoin de laboratoires et d’équipement de pointe pour faire des découvertes et innover. Aujourd’hui, à l’Université Laurentienne, l’honorable Kirsty Duncan, ministre des Sciences, a souligné l’importance de soutenir l’innovation en annonçant un investissement de plus de 52 millions de dollars du gouvernement du Canada pour financer 220 nouveaux projets d’infrastructure dans 51 universités aux quatre coins du pays. Ce financement provenant du Fonds des leaders John-R.-Evans de la Fondation canadienne pour l’innovation (FCI) permettra à des universités et à des chercheurs de partout au pays de mener des recherches révolutionnaires dans des installations de calibre mondial.
L’Université Laurentienne reçoit plus de 500 000 dollars pour deux projets, dont l’un est une nouvelle installation d’analyse sur le terrain et en laboratoire qui aidera Mme Nadia Mykytczuk et son équipe à concevoir de nouvelles solutions pour faire face aux importants couts financiers et environnementaux liés à l’exploitation minière. Les travaux de Mme Mykytczuk, qui sont consacrés à la mise au point de technologies de rechange pour la gestion des déchets miniers, plus particulièrement sous le froid climat des régions nordiques, contribuent à rendre l’industrie minière toujours plus propre, plus sécuritaire et plus efficiente.
Ancien bénéficiaire d’une enveloppe du Fonds des leaders John-R.-Evans et collaborateur au second projet financé à l’Université Laurentienne, Thomas Merritt étudie la complexité moléculaire et la fonction protéique pour relever un éventail de défis, qui vont des maladies métaboliques et du stress biologique à l’élimination des déchets industriels.
Le Fonds des leaders John-R.-Evans joue un important rôle de soutien à la recherche auprès des universités canadiennes. En effet, il les aide à recruter et à maintenir en poste les meilleurs talents – notamment les chercheurs en début de carrière – en leur permettant de se procurer l’équipement de pointe dont ceux-ci ont besoin pour exceller dans leur domaine.

« La contribution provenant du Fonds des leaders John-R.-Evans est un investissement capital qui m’aidera à trouver plus rapidement des solutions concrètes à des questionnements scientifiques », a précisé Mme Nadia Mykytczuk, titulaire d’une chaire de recherche industrielle de la Société de gestion du Fonds du patrimoine du Nord de l'Ontario en bioprospection, bioremédiation et communication scientifique à l’Université Laurentienne. « Sans ce financement d’infrastructure, il serait impossible de mettre sur pied un nouveau programme de recherche capable d’apporter une réponse à nos questionnements scientifiques. »

- Mme Nadia Mykytczuk est microbiologiste de l’environnement au Centre pour la vitalité des lacs Vale de l’Université Laurentienne. Ses travaux portent sur les écosystèmes extrêmes et perturbés – plus particulièrement sur le drainage minier acide, les sites pollués par les métaux et les communautés microbiennes du Haut-Arctique.
- Le Fonds des leaders John-R.-Evans permet à un certain nombre de chercheurs exceptionnels dans des établissements partout au pays de mener des activités de recherche de pointe en leur procurant les outils et l’équipement dont ils ont besoin pour demeurer ou devenir des chefs de file dans leur domaine.
- Le financement d’immobilisations total de cette annonce est de 40 013 015 dollars. Par ailleurs, un montant supplémentaire de 12 003 905 dollars du Fonds d'exploitation des infrastructures aidera les établissements à assumer les couts additionnels d’exploitation et de maintenance associés à l’acquisition de la nouvelle infrastructure. Le financement total, qui comprend le montant du Fonds d’exploitation des infrastructures, s’élève à 52 016 920 dollars.
