Les meilleurs chercheuses et chercheurs canadiens sont outillés pour demeurer en tête du peloton
OTTAWA, ONTARIO — Les meilleurs chercheuses et chercheurs canadiens ont besoin d’outils de haute performance et de locaux avant-gardistes pour s’attaquer aux enjeux sociaux, environnementaux et économiques qui touchent la population canadienne. Le gouvernement du Canada, par l’entremise de la Fondation canadienne pour l’innovation (FCI), offre plus de 96 millions de dollars de financement afin d’appuyer 377 nouveaux projets d’infrastructures de recherche dans 55 établissements d’un océan à l’autre. Ce total inclut plus de 22 millions de dollars par le biais du Fonds d’exploitation des infrastructures en vue de soutenir les établissements vis-à-vis des coûts croissants d’exploitation et de maintenance reliés aux nouvelles infrastructures.
Octroyé par l’entremise du Fonds des leaders John-R.-Evans (JELF), ce financement aide les universités à recruter et à maintenir en poste les meilleurs talents de la recherche des quatre coins du monde en leur offrant l’infrastructure hautement spécialisée dont ils ont besoin pour être des leaders dans leur domaine. Selon Roseann O’Reilly Runte, présidente-directrice générale de la FCI, « Le soutien de la Fondation canadienne pour l’innovation est un gage de succès pour les chercheuses et chercheurs à chacune des étapes de leur carrière. Le Fonds des leaders John-R.-Evans aide les universités, les instituts et les hôpitaux de recherche du Canada à faire converger les conditions qui permettent aux experts de la recherche d’exceller. »
Voici des exemples de projets qui ont bénéficié du soutien de la FCI pour l’infrastructures de recherche :
- Des chercheuses et chercheurs de l’Université Vancouver Island, à Nanaimo, en Colombie-Britannique, veulent comprendre comment les vagues de chaleur marines agissent sur la santé des poissons, des mollusques et des crustacés sur la côte Ouest canadienne. Les événements de chaleur extrême qui se produisent plus fréquemment en raison des changements climatiques, apparaissent néfastes pour la vie des organismes marins et de ce fait, pour les Premières Nations et les communautés côtières sur le plan socioéconomique.
- Un projet mené à l’Université McGill, à Montréal, au Québec, portera sur la relation imprécise entre les bactéries de l’intestin humain, le métabolisme et le système immunitaire. Cette recherche permettra de mettre au point de nouveaux médicaments plus efficaces qui serviront à traiter les maladies inflammatoires de l’intestin, l’obésité, l’asthme et d’autres maladies chroniques.
- Des chercheuses et chercheurs de l’Université du Cap Breton, à Sydney, en Nouvelle-Écosse, organiseront des visites historiques interactives qui montreront comment les communautés de l’île s’adaptent à la fermeture de leurs industries du charbon et de l’acier. Préserver l’histoire de ces industries défuntes et mieux comprendre comment les communautés en général s’adaptent à une telle disparition sont les buts de ces visites.
- Une équipe de l’Université de Calgary mettra au point une nouvelle façon de mesurer la santé des terres humides restaurées dans les sables bitumineux de l’Alberta afin d’aider les industries pétrolière et gazière à protéger la santé et réhabiliter la biodiversité d’anciens paysages industriels.
- Des chercheuses et chercheurs de l’Université d’Ottawa feront progresser leurs travaux précurseurs sur les maladies génétiques rares qui touchent les enfants, afin de trouver de meilleurs traitements qui entraînent moins d’effets indésirables.
- L’Université de Winnipeg abritera un centre de recherche autochtone sur l’apprentissage et l’engagement communautaires dédié aux jeunes autochtones. Les studios, laboratoires de médias numériques et espaces de travail collaboratifs du centre, mettront en valeur les pratiques artistiques, renforceront les initiatives de mentorat d’artistes émergents, d’étudiants et d’experts, et offriront des possibilités de développement de compétences technologiques pour les peuples autochtones, néo-canadiens et non autochtones.
- À l’Université de Toronto, des chercheuses et chercheurs étudieront comment certains circuits neuronaux du cerveau affectent la prise de décisions, ce qui permettra de comprendre pourquoi les maladies mentales, qui se manifestent généralement tôt dans le développement humain, peuvent souvent entraîner de mauvaises prises de décision. Grâce à ce projet, de nouveaux traitements en santé mentale pourraient voir le jour et être prescrits plus rapidement au cours de la vie, et cela pourrait ainsi ralentir la progression d’une maladie, diminuer les coûts des soins en santé mentale et par conséquent améliorer la qualité de vie de millions de Canadiens et de Canadiennes aux prises avec une maladie mentale.
Dans le même esprit, la FCI a également annoncé, le 14 août, une annonce de financement du Fonds des leaders John-R.-Evans - Programme des chaires de recherche du Canada.
