Un investissement dans l’infrastructure de recherche pour soutenir les personnes de grand talent du Canada
SHERBROOKE (QUÉBEC) – Aujourd’hui, le gouvernement du Canada a annoncé l’octroi de près de 86 millions de dollars par l’entremise de la Fondation canadienne pour l’innovation (FCI) afin de soutenir 316 projets d’infrastructure de recherche dans 47 établissements partout au pays.
Cette contribution, octroyée par l’intermédiaire du Fonds des leaders John-R.-Evans (FLJE), aidera les établissements à attirer et à retenir nos meilleurs chercheurs et chercheuses.
L’honorable Marie-Claude Bibeau, ministre du Revenu national, a fait cette annonce à l’Université de Sherbrooke, au nom de l’honorable François-Philippe Champagne, ministre de l’Innovation, des Sciences et de l’Industrie et de l'honorable Mark Holland, ministre de la Santé.
Les projets financés par le Fonds des leaders John-R.-Evans comprennent les suivants :
Prédire l’élévation du niveau de la mer : en raison de l’évolution rapide des glaciers et des calottes glaciaires à l’échelle planétaire, il devient de plus en plus difficile de prédire l’élévation du niveau de la mer, d’autant plus que nous connaissons mal la façon dont la glace interagit avec l’océan. Cela tient en partie au phénomène de vêlage au cours duquel de gros blocs de glace s’effondrent dans l’eau, ce qui rend périlleuse l’étude de l’environnement océanique et glaciaire. Des scientifiques de l’Université du Manitoba tentent de remédier à cette situation au moyen d’un véhicule de surface autonome, financé par la FCI, qui peut mesurer, entre autres, la température de l’océan et celle de l’atmosphère, ainsi que l’épaisseur et la structure de la glace. Les premières mesures seront effectuées sur un glacier situé au sud de l’île d’Ellesmere, dans le nord du Nunavut, en collaboration avec la communauté inuite d’Aujuittuq (Grise Fiord), située à proximité;
Rationaliser la production du fromage : l’industrie laitière est un important pilier socioéconomique du secteur agroalimentaire canadien. En effet, elle emploie plus de 200 000 personnes et réalise un chiffre d’affaires de plus de 18 milliards de dollars par année. Pour l’aider à demeurer concurrentielle à l’échelle internationale, un projet de l’Université Laval, à Québec, cherche à optimiser la production de la mozzarella et d’autres fromages du même type. Grâce au financement de la FCI, le Centre de recherche en science et technologie du lait (STELA) pourra se doter d’une extrudeuse pour mettre à l’essai une méthode de production plus efficace. Le projet soutiendra également la formation spécialisée de 25 étudiantes et étudiants. Chaque année, le Canada produit plus de 155 000 tonnes de mozzarella;
Étudier le lien entre les mutations génétiques et les maladies mentales : les gènes qui contrôlent les cycles veille-sommeil dans le cerveau assurent également la synchronisation des différentes parties du cerveau. Selon certaines études, les gènes de certaines personnes atteintes d’une maladie mentale présentent des mutations qui peuvent entraîner des perturbations dans plusieurs zones du cerveau. Des scientifiques de l’Université de l’Alberta vont se pencher sur ce phénomène chez la mouche des fruits en utilisant des détecteurs spécialisés et un microscope financés par la FCI pour prendre des centaines de mesures à la fois. Il s’agit d’examiner l’activité des gènes dans différentes zones du cerveau et de trouver des moyens de faire en sorte que ces zones se synchronisent. Ce projet de recherche permettra de mieux comprendre le rôle que joue la génétique dans le développement de certaines maladies mentales et de proposer des pistes de traitement.
