Des investissements majeurs dans les équipements de recherche : un catalyseur pour l’innovation
OTTAWA, ONTARIO — Les chercheurs et chercheuses du Canada consacrent temps et énergie à mieux comprendre les enjeux qui concernent la population canadienne et à y trouver des solutions. Grâce à un accès à des installations et des outils adéquats, les équipes de recherche peuvent, par exemple, élaborer un programme d’intervention pour prévenir l’obésité infantile, ou encore chercher à réduire les émissions de carbone en transformant les déchets agricoles en nouveaux produits. Ces équipes de recherche canadiennes méritent donc d’avoir les meilleurs équipements et installations et elles en ont besoin pour faire progresser des idées ambitieuses, répondre aux problèmes environnementaux et sanitaires, et collaborer avec les leaders du monde entier dans le milieu de la recherche.
Aujourd'hui, l'honorable Randy Boissonnault, ministre de l'Emploi, du Développement de la main-d'œuvre et des Langues officielles, au nom de l’honorable François-Philippe Champagne, ministre de l’Innovation, des Sciences et de l’Industrie, et de l'honorable Mark Holland, ministre de la Santé, a annoncé l’octroi de plus de 113 millions de dollars à 396 projets d’infrastructure de recherche dans 56 universités du pays. Cette contribution, par l’intermédiaire du Fonds des leaders John‑R.-Evans (FLJE) de la Fondation canadienne pour l’innovation (FCI), aidera les universités à être plus concurrentielles pour recruter et retenir des chercheuses et des chercheurs exceptionnels en les aidant à acquérir les laboratoires, les équipements et les installations de pointe nécessaires pour faire des découvertes qui auront des retombées pour la population canadienne.
Par exemple, les projets financés grâce au FLJE contribueront à :
- Renforcer l’économie bleue du Canada atlantique – Université Cape Breton (Sydney, Nouvelle-Écosse)
Les investissements dans l’économie océanique du Canada atlantique permettent d’aplanir des difficultés qui entravent la croissance économique et le développement social dans toute la région, et en particulier sur l’île du Cap-Breton, notamment la pollution de l’eau causée par les mines de charbon abandonnées et l’insécurité alimentaire. Afin de stimuler cette nouvelle économie, des chercheurs et chercheuses de l’Université Cape Breton créeront un laboratoire pour mettre au point des technologies comme des dispositifs de traitement de l’eau à petite échelle qui faciliteront l’accès à l’eau potable, amélioreront la santé et le bien-être des communautés éloignées et des Premières Nations, et favoriseront le développement social et équitable sur l’île du Cap-Breton. - Rendre les STIM plus accessibles – Université Simon-Fraser (Burnaby, Colombie-Britannique)
Les personnes ayant une déficience visuelle sont souvent exclues des études et du travail dans de nombreuses branches des sciences, de la technologie, de l’ingénierie et des mathématiques (STIM), notamment celles du génie électrique et informatique. En effet, les compétences essentielles pour étudier et travailler dans le domaine des STIM reposent sur des informations visuelles qui font défaut à ces personnes. Une équipe de recherche de l’Université Simon-Fraser créera un environnement informatique physique où ces personnes pourront s’exercer à l’électronique et à l’informatique de base, et rendra le domaine des STIM plus inclusif et accessible à toutes les personnes.
- Créer un secteur des énergies renouvelables durable – Université de Sherbrooke (Sherbrooke, Québec)
La décarbonisation du secteur énergétique québécois et canadien entraîne la conception de matériaux innovants, comme les céramiques à haut rendement et les alliages à haute entropie (métaux composés de trois éléments ou plus) pour stocker les énergies renouvelables. Un programme de recherche de l’Université de Sherbrooke vise à développer et à étudier ces céramiques et ces alliages dans le but de réduire les éventuelles répercussions environnementales de leur extraction, de leur production, de leur utilisation et de la gestion de leur fin de vie. Les résultats obtenus permettront non seulement d’améliorer les capacités de stockage des énergies renouvelables au Canada, mais contribueront également à leur développement durable.

- Cette somme comprend 26 182 156 dollars octroyés au titre du Fonds d’exploitation des infrastructures, un mécanisme qui aide les établissements à absorber les coûts supplémentaires d’exploitation et de maintenance liés aux nouvelles infrastructures;
- Le financement du FLJE aide les établissements à attirer et à retenir des chercheurs et chercheuses d’exception. Il sert également à l’acquisition d’outils qui permettent aux équipes de recherche d’innover.
