CFI supports Canada Research Chairs with $9.5 million in infrastructure funding
OTTAWA, ONTARIO — For Canada to address the national and international challenges it faces around essential issues such as health, sustainability, reconciliation and the economy, it is critical that Canadian universities have the research equipment and laboratories they need to be attractive career destinations for the best of today’s and tomorrow’s researchers.
Today, the Government of Canada, through the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI), is investing more than $9.5 million in research infrastructure to support 43 Canada Research Chairs (CRC) at 19 institutions. Awarded through the CFI’s John R. Evans Leaders Fund (JELF), the total also includes close to $2.2 million to help institutions with the infrastructure’s operating and maintenance costs.

The CFI-funded infrastructure will support a range of research areas, including affordable housing, Indigenous environmental science, the wellbeing of youth and diseases of the ageing.
Awarded in partnership with the CRC Program, the JELF allows universities to attract top talent in diverse fields of research by providing them with the state-of-the art infrastructure required to think big and innovate. The CRC Program is investing $151 million toward 188 new and renewed Chairs at 43 institutions across Canada.
