CFI makes new governance appointments

New Board Directors and Members will contribute their expertise to carrying out the CFI’s mandate

OTTAWA, ONTARIO — The Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) is pleased to welcome several new appointments to its Board of Directors and Members governing bodies.

Bruce Archibald and François Gros-Louis were appointed by Members to the CFI Board of Directors, joining a distinguished group of individuals representing academia, industry and the public and not-for-profit sectors. They will each serve a three-year term.

Archibald is president of Archibald Innovations Inc., a management consulting company specializing in science evaluation, management and policy, while Gros-Louis is a full professor in the department of surgery at Université Laval’s faculty of medicine and is the Canada Research Chair in Tissue Engineering and 3D Modelling of Brain Disease.

In addition, Morag Park and William Waterman have been reappointed as Board Directors for a second three-year term.

The CFI also welcomes new Members, Janet Ecker, founding CEO of the Toronto Financial Services Alliance and former Ontario minister of finance, and Alexandra King, assistant professor of general internal medicine and Cameco Chair in Indigenous Health and Wellness at the University of Saskatchewan.

The CFI would like to thank Board Chair Ingrid Pickering, Directors Peter Dinsdale, Marc Ouellette, Catherine Aczel Boivie and John MacLaine Kelly, and Member David Walker for their service.

The CFI Board of Directors reports to our Members — a higher governing body similar to a company’s shareholders, but representing the Canadian public. These members have a deep understanding of research’s impact on society and are responsible for the appointment of seven of the 13 Board Directors. The Government of Canada appoints the remainder.

The CFI responsibly manages its funding programs. Our executive team, Members and Board of Directors ensure that our operations embody, and our policies reflect, the highest standards for federally funded programs.

CFI mandate

Our mandate is to invest in research infrastructure in order to increase the capability of Canada’s universities, colleges, research hospitals and non-profit research organizations to carry out high quality research.
