Canada Foundation for Innovation Board welcomes release of Fundamental Science Review
OTTAWA, ONTARIO – The Board of Directors of the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) welcomes the recommendations made by Canada’s Fundamental Science Review Panel, in its report released Monday.
“This report charts an ambitious roadmap for research in this country,” said Kevin Smith, Chair of the CFI Board. “It makes us optimistic about the future for researchers, research institutions and for the ultimate recipients of research results — the people of Canada and the world.”

The report, commissioned by Science Minister, Kirsty Duncan, in June 2016, and written by an independent panel led by former University of Toronto president, Dr. David Naylor, highlights the strengths of Canada’s research system and points to areas where federal support for research can be improved. The panel offers a series of recommendations that focus on increasing federal investments in research and better coordination among the federal granting agencies and the CFI.
It also recommends improved support for early-career researchers, international collaborations, major research facilities, equity and diversity in research, as well as investments that will further enhance research infrastructure and its operational funding.
“We are proud of the accomplishments the CFI and the federal granting agencies have had in supporting our research community,” said Smith, “and we look forward to continuing to work with the Government of Canada in ensuring Canada continues to gain ground as a global leader in research and innovation.”
