Underneath a small village in the Swiss countryside, a 7,000-tonne detector probes the fundamental structure of the universe and the particles that form the basic building blocks of matter. This is the ATLAS experiment, funded in part by the CFI. It is one of four major experiments at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, which is home to the world’s largest and most complex scientific instruments. Listen to CERN’s Director-General, Fabiola Gianotti, speak on the role of discovery research in innovation, and the critical role the next generation of researchers plays in helping unravel the mysteries of the universe.
