More than $12 million awarded to Canada Research Chairs to advance cutting-edge research
OTTAWA, ONTARIO — Canada Research Chairs at 25 universities and colleges across the country will receive more than $12 million from the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) to carry out world-class research. The funding, through the CFI’s John R. Evans Leaders Fund, is part of a partnership with the Canada Research Chairs Program.
More than $9 million will support 55 research projects across Canada with an additional $2.8 million devoted to operating and maintenance costs associated with the new infrastructure.
Among the list of recipients is McMaster University’s Sheila Singh, who will use the funding to establish a Brain Tumor Therapy Assessment Suite, allowing clinicians to build custom treatments for patients according to their individual cancer cells. Funding will also benefit graduate students at Memorial University of Newfoundland where a Research Storytelling Lab, led by Julia Christensen, will help raise awareness on issues of homelessness in northern communities in Canada and abroad.
“The CFI values working with the Chairs program to provide the tools researchers need to stay on the cutting edge in their fields,” says Roseann O’Reilly Runte, President and CEO of the CFI. “This ensures they are well equipped to make discoveries and develop innovations that will have a meaningful impact on Canadians.”
Quick facts:
- The CFI will support 55 projects at research institutions across Canada with a contribution of $9,353,913.
- An additional $2,806,174 will be awarded to institutions under the Infrastructure Operating Fund to help with the maintenance and operation of new infrastructure.
- The John R. Evans Leaders Fund allows universities and colleges to attract top talent in diverse fields of research by providing them with the state-of-the art infrastructure required to think big and innovate.
- The CFI and the Canada Research Chairs Secretariat partner through the JELF to provide top-notch infrastructure for research institutions across Canada.
