In today's world, global mobility is a key to success. The ability to communicate effectively in more than one language is an excellent way to achieve that mobility.
The Language Research Centre at the University of Calgary provides leadership in the areas of language, teaching, and the effective use of technologies. It also offers direction for policy-making.
Dr. John Archibald, the Centre's director, says their work focuses on enabling students to learn languages in new ways, evaluating how new technologies can be best integrated into the learning process, and studying how adults learn languages.
The Centre is equipped with wireless language labs and smart classrooms. In addition, there are speech analysis systems, head-mounted infrared eye-trackers to determine bilingual literacy, and an electroencephalograph for studying the brain.
