Interdisciplinary teams make plan for smooth, safe traffic flow
December 1, 2002

Dr. Baher Abdulhai is using a CFI investment to investigate a growing problem in major Canadian cities: traffic congestion.

Dr. Abdulhai is the founder and director of the University of Toronto's Intelligent Transportation Systems Centre and Testbed. At the unique Canadian facility, he and his research team are developing ways to ease traffic jams, improve road safety, and reduce pollution, all of which are caused by our car-obsessed society.

Combining state-of-the-art technology with what Abdulhai calls a "melting pot" of researchers and practitioners, the Centre's work focuses on a variety of projects. One project involves designing traffic-control methods that capitalize on a network of vehicle detectors on the roads to make devices like traffic lights more responsive to traffic fluctuations.
