28 Canadian universities receive $11.8 Million to develop their research infrastructure

Ottawa, June 7, 2000…Dr. David W. Strangway, President and CEO of the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI), today announced an investment of $11.8 million to strengthen the research capacity at 28 Canadian universities. 

"The CFI invests in partnership with the provinces and the institutions to ensure our researchers and students have access to world-class facilities," said Dr. Strangway. "This is essential not only to attract the very best researchers to our universities but also to retain outstanding Canadian researchers in Canada."

Under the New Opportunities Fund, the CFI Board of Directors approved an investment of $10.1 million for 67 projects at 24 universities. These projects will help launch the research career of 97 new faculty members. They include: 

  • equipment to support the establishment of an industrial research chair in high-speed microelectronics at the University of British Columbia;
  • a facility at the University of Western Ontario to study infectious and pulmonary diseases;
  • a photonics laboratory for advanced materials at McGill University; and
  • a facility at Memorial University to study human physiology and safety in Newfoundland's offshore industries. 

Since the launch of the New Opportunities Fund in August 1998, the CFI has invested a total of $71.9 million to support 715 researchers at 35 institutions.

Under the University Research Development Fund, four institutions will receive funding for eight projects representing a total of $1.6 million. They include: 

  • a resource geology laboratory at Brandon University; and
  • equipment to support the development of the Centre for Marine and Aquatic Resources at the University of Prince Edward Island. 

The University Research Development Fund is designed for institutions that received, during the 1994-96 period, less than 1% of the total sponsored research funding in Canadian universities. Since its launch in 1998, the University Research Development Fund has supported 106 infrastructure projects at 28 universities.

The CFI is an independent, not-for-profit corporation established by the federal government in 1997 to address an urgent need of Canada's research community: new, state-of-the-art research infrastructure. The CFI has been entrusted with a capital investment budget of $1.9 billion, and its investments are made in partnership with all levels of government, as well as with the private and voluntary sectors. Its work focuses on health, the environment, science and engineering.
